In the coming weeks we plan to add essays and reflections on aspects of undertaking research in archives and manuscript libraries. The first two feature articles will look at the historical evolution of these institutions and the future directions many of them plan to take. Specifically, Christopher Markiewicz will examine the development of libraries and archives in Istanbul since their initial foundation up to the present. Meanwhile, Nir Shafir will evaluate the new tools and methods available to researchers in light of these institutions’ entry into the digital age.
Beyond these two initial articles, we plan to add essays periodically on conducting research in Ottoman and Islamic studies. Some of these essays may consider specific questions concerning aspects of particular collections, while others will be more synthetic and consider various techniques for conducting research in the field.
